Currently, we don’t know precisely when the next generation of consoles will release, though both are slated for Holiday 2020. With that in mind, the PS5 and XSX versions of Marvel’s Avengers should hit shelves sometime in November or December, when Sony and Microsoft have (mostly) traditionally launched consoles.
Narratively, Avengers is set five years after A-Day, and it will feature several notable and famous characters, including Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, and Kamala Khan’s Ms. Marvel. Though not all of the game’s villains have been revealed, we do know that Abomination, Task Master, and A.I.M. will make appearances. The story is not connected to the MCU.
Marvel’s Avengers can be played as a single-player experience or as a cooperative experience, allowing for 4-player co-op. Square Enix also recently revealed that it will feature crossplay between current- and next-gen consoles, including PS4 and PS5, as well as Xbox One and Xbox Series X.
In addition, Square has confirmed that PS4 and Xbox One players will be able to upgrade their PS4 and Xbox One versions of Avengers to PS5 and XSX versions for free should they pick up the new systems. Cross-save functionality will also allow for saves, player progression, and player profiles to be transferred between versions.
Marvel’s Avengers was announced back in 2017, while the game’s first trailer was unveiled at E3 2019. Originally set to launch in May 2020, the game was delayed to September 4 for extra polish.
We were able to go hands-on with Avengers at PAX West 2019 and learned more about Hero Missions, Warzone, and how Mjolnir feels a lot like Kratos’ axe. Pre-orders are currently available, and you can see what’s included in each version of the game right here.
